to beckley, west virginia. you see the president of the united states there. he's at this memorial service. also west virginia governor joe manchin there. a number of other dignitaries. what's happening right now there in beckley is family members of the 29 victims of this month's coal mine explosion are filing in. you see the white crosses there just in the backdrop. what we understand will happen is a number of the family members, one representative of each of the 29 families, will actually have a helmet and place the helmet on each of the 29 crosses that represent the 29 men who were killed in that underground explosion. we also understand maybe roughly about 15 minutes after the hour, president obama will deliver the eulogy. we understand it might be about ten minutes long. of course, he'll talk about the collective grief that people are feeling as a result of this explosion and the lives lost, and he will also try to offer some assurances that some measures of safety will be put into place for future coal miners and other communities that have such great investments in the coal mining

virginia and throughout the country are taught to escape first. they're taught to get out of the mine the way they came in first. they retreat to a chamber or rescue shelter as a last resort. when they have made the determination, if their training has taken, if they have made the determination that they need to go to a shelter, that that's the last place that they would go. a shelter is a sophisticated barricade, in my opinion. >> is there any evidence that leads you believe that anyone is alive? is there any evidence of that? >> we don't have any at this point. we just have hope. >> how far is that refuge chamber from the entrance to the hole? >> do you know? >> it's one inch equals a 500-foot map. i just guesstimated about 8,000 feet. >> so rescuers would have to go in two miles. >> they'll ride in a certain distance. they won't walk in from the outside. we'll get their them in there as quickly as possible for them to get in as far as we can. >>. mine in west virginia. that is according to west virginia governor joe manchin. 25 miners were killed in monday's explosion but 4 others are still listed as missing. the first order of business is getting dangerous methane and carbon monoxide out of that mine so rescue crews can go back in. one ventilation hole reached the mine early this evening. they drilled down into the mountain. rescuers are planning to drill another hole. more holes. and then they can hope to start up fans which will draw the toxic air out here. there's methane and other things in here. then they'll take air quality readings. once that's done they'll get in there. listen to this. >> they're trying to get those readings. until we start getting those readings and knowing where we are and what type of air we have down there will determine how quick and what timetable we're on. once we do that then you'll have a better idea of when they believe that the air will be safe enough to send rescue teams in. the rescue teams are prepared. they are charged up, ready to go. and they will go at a moment's notice. >> all right

intensifies for four miners after monday's deadly blast at a west virginia coal mine. recrews are making proing res while families for the 25 killed are making final arrangements. west virginia governor joe manchin telling us rescuers have made a breakthrough completing one of the four bore holes in the area where miners are believed to be. that hole is an exhaust port using high-pressure fans to fill the gas-filled mine with clean air. here's the heart wrenching reality. there's been no response from any of the missing miners as rescuers continue to knock on pipes hoping those miners will reply. we've got big-time team coverage. 've got a watch here across parts of maryland, west virginia and virginia, it includes you into washington, d.c., and we're monitoring this area through the carolinas for the potential of severe thunderstorms popping up over the next couple of hours. we'll start out by showing you the radar kind of close in, into just to the northwest of d.c., where these thunderstorms are becoming very intense, and there you can see some severe, damaging fwhinds winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. a thunderstorm watch included tampa, st. pete, extending near ft. myers and the palm bay area. we've been watching this intense line. we had two waves that moved through earlier today, one that moved through gainesville causing some tree damage and power lines down and also getting word north of tampa there are some power lines down here as well. this is a very intense line of storms and we could see winds in excess of 70 miles per hour and that in and of itself can cause serious damage. if you get the severe thunderstorm warning you need to take it seriously and stay indoors until that's thank storm passes. t

workers from that west virginia coal mine begins today. search teams found the last four bodies early saturday but couldn't recover any because of toxic gases still in the mine. 29 miners died in the explosion last month. recovering the bodies could take as long as two days. west virginia's governor is calling for a moment of silence this afternoon at 3:30. investigators will try too determine what caused that deadly explosion. the scene in front have o the presidential palace in warsaw, poland this morning is both beautiful and sad. thousands of flowers and can dals fill the sidewalk. they reflect a nation in mourning. president lech kaczynski, his wife and many of the political and business leaders were killed saturday in a plane crash in western russia. poland begins an official week of mourning. the president's body was returned to warsaw yesterday. many of the bodies remain unidentified. 97 people died in that crash. our nic robertson reports that evidence is pointing to two possible causes, bad weather and the plane's pilots failing to effectively communicate with air traffic co

to talk again because netherlands, let's talk about a couple from the u.s. they live in richmond, virginia. they left four kids at home so they can enjoy a trip to europe. here they are in the netherlands and they are stuck. they can't get back. they are on the phone or steve paterson is on the phone with me now. steve, give me an idea. you and your wife, you're there, safe, it's been a great trip. you had no idea you would be stuck for this long while your kids are stateside. your kids are under the care of your entire community? it has come together while you're stuck overseas. >> yes. that's right. i literally over the last three days spent hours on the phone and e-mails trying to coordinate extending childcare so we had a lot of folks jump in and help. it definitely is challenging, you can imagine. we had a great time here. we've been here for eight days now. we were supposed to go home yesterday. that flight got canceled. we got booked on another flight today. that obviously got canceled. we are now on a monday flight. we are hoping we'll be lifting off. there are lots of challenges.
